Multiple Sclerosis and Vision Loss
vision lossA team of researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine combined high-resolution eye scans and genetic tests to identify three genes involved in the complement immune pathway that is linked to more rapid degeneration of nervous tissue in the eye and loss of sight. Mutations in genes are associated with a higher likelihood of more severe forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) and are linked to faster vision loss.

"We believe that our study opens up a new line of investigation targeting complement genes as a potential way to treat disease progression and nerve cell death," said Peter Calabresi, MD, the study's senior leader and a professor at Johns Hopkins University
