Vision Rehabilitation Courses

Our Vision Rehabilitation Courses give our clients the life-skills and independent living skills they need to live normal, full and productive lives. Working in conjunction with our other programs, these courses are tailored to the individual needs and goals of the client and help enhance their confidence and ability to perform everyday tasks. San Diego Center for the Blind offers a full schedule of Vision Rehabilitation Courses including:

Exercise

This energizing low vision rehabilitation course sets the tempo for the day by getting students up and moving. The fun-filled exercises are tailored specifically to the needs of vision-impaired individuals and seniors and are designed to help improve circulation, balance and flexibility.

Safety Skills Training

This class works with the student to teach them basic safety skills training to help them navigate through daily life. Independent living skills topics cover all aspects of daily life from preparing meals in the home to crossing the street safely and getting to class on time.

Independent Living Skills

One of our most popular low vision rehabilitation courses, we help individuals learn methods for independently performing familiar tasks.
Our professional and caring instructors work closely with each student to help them master these tasks safely, confidently and efficiently. Tasks include:

  • Financial management
  • Cooking and eating
  • Personal hygiene
  • Applying toiletries and cosmetics
  • Handwriting tasks
  • Home maintenance
  • and other independent living skills!

Sensory Awareness Training

This unique class builds the student's confidence in their fully functioning senses of touch, smell, taste and hearing - all of which can help compensate for their loss of vision. Students learn through hands-on training and class exercises how to use informational clues from their sensory abilities more productively.

Kitchen Skills

Preparing nutritious meals in a safe and efficient manner is the focus of this hands-on low vision rehabilitation course. Students learn adaptive techniques for various cooking tasks, as well as safety skills for using a wide range of utensils and appliances such as a microwave oven, cook top, conventional oven and dishwasher.

Group Counseling

This peer group session puts students together to share experiences, both positive and negative, with each other and compare problem solving skills and solutions to daily obstacles. Through shared experiences and open discussion, students help each other through the tough times and, along the way, make friendships that can last a lifetime.

Resource Information

This course familiarizes students with what types of local, state and national resources are available to persons with vision limitations. Students will learn where to go to find information, what questions to ask and what they will need to take advantage of them.

Orientation and Mobility

The art of moving safely and efficiently from place to place with confidence and purpose is taught at home, in the neighborhood and the community. Skills taught are individually tailored based on the goals of the client. The sight impaired person may learn to travel using a white cane, need additional assistance in how to access public transportation or how to become oriented to the workplace or college campus. Orientation and Mobility services are provided by highly trained specialists who offer one-on-one skill training and guidance.

Keyboard Skills

Touch-typing is taught to help students to write notes, keep lists and correspond with family and friends. This class is a prerequisite for the accessible computer training class.

Braille

These communications systems provide students with the means to write and read Braille, a system of raised dots to form letters. It is useful for note taking, labeling of a wide range of objects particularly medicines, maintaining address and phone lists, writing letters and reading.

Low Vision Training

This service helps unlock the mystery of vision by explaining the complex structure and function of the eye. With this knowledge, students will have a better understanding of various types of vision loss and will have the opportunity to use a variety of low vision devices that may help enhance visual abilities. Low vision aids and appliances such as magnifiers, monoculars, specialized lighting and other tools are available for demonstration and purchase. This service is provided both as a class and individually by appointment.
