What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Bearded manDiabetic retinopathy results in vision loss and blindness those with diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy affects blood vessels in the retina (the light-sensitive layer of tissue in the back of your eye).

Diabetes patients should get a comprehensive dilated eye exam annually. Diabetic retinopathy may not display any symptoms initially — but finding it early can help you  and your doctor take actions to protect your vision.
