People who are visually impaired have not taken science classes in great numbers, probably partly due to the visual components of many areas of science. But a new device is helping people ‘see’ microscopic images using touch-feedback. Using the example of a blood smear, this article outlines how a joystick hooked up to a microscope allows a visually impaired user to feel the outline of white and red blood cells and learn more about what is happening on the slide.
